| Chronic Disease Coalition |
Leading causes of death in Alamance County include Heart Disease/Stroke, Cancer, and Diabetes. Each of these chronic illnesses are preventable. Yet, Alamance County citizens continue to suffer from these diseases.
Healthy Alamance has several programs to encourage positive lifestyle changes. Please join us if you want to help.
Prostate Cancer:
Being screened regularly helps to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Alamance Regional Medical Center offers free prostate screenings annually, in September. Look for upcoming programs to learn more about how this simple screening can save your life.
Heart disease:
Incorporating daily walking into your routine can have tremendous health benefits. Alamance Walks and Graham Walks is a way to come together as a community and relieve stress, increase self-esteem, help loose a few extra pounds, maintain a healthy weight, lower blood pressure, and decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Walks meet for 6-weeks every fall and spring in the historic downtown areas of Burlington and Graham. For dates please check the calendar or call (336) 513-5590.
Type 2 Diabetes:
The chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes is greatly reduced by engaging in regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight. Being Healthy Counts to H.I.M. (Health Improvement Ministry) offers classes and skills in a faith based setting to help people achieve healthy lifestyle changes in order to reduce their risk of diabetes. For more information about classes, call 513-5590.
