Asthma is the number one chronic childhood disease in Alamance
County, accounting for numerous hospitalizations, emergency room
visits and absences from
school. The Pediatric Asthma Center benefits the patient by:
- Preventing asthma attacks from recurring
- Decreasing or avoiding emergency visits and admissions to the
hospital
- Decreasing school absences
The Pediatric Asthma Center educates asthmatic children (birth
to age 17) and their families about ways to control and prevent
asthma attacks. A team of nurses, respiratory therapists, case managers.
and an environmental health specialist work together to assist families
with asthmatic children.
OUR SERVICES
We offer the following services for patients and their families,
as well as for medical and school health staff:
- Follow up of patients after hospitalizations and emergency room
visits
- Education and case management services for outpatient referrals
- Use of care plans designed to meet patient's needs
- Assess social needs and concerns for each patient
- Conduct environmental assessments of the home
- Help patients find a primary care provider
- Provide educational and support services for local schools,
physicians, patients. and families based on the National Asthma
Education and Prevention Program guidelines for diagnosis and
management of asthma

- Physicians (Primary Care Providers/Specialists)
- Emergency Departments
- School Health Specialists
- Pharmacists
- Community Agencies

Alamance Regional Medical Center, Alamance County Health Department,
Alamance-Burlington School System, Smart Start of Alamance County,
and also includes local pediatricians, pharmacists, and parents
